U.S. Air Force investigators say a general who was fired as commander of American land-based nuclear missile forces engaged in "inappropriate behavior" while on official business in Russia.

The report by the Air Force inspector general said Major General Michael Carey drank alcohol heavily, was rude to his Russian hosts, and spent time with foreign women who might have been spies in bars.

Carey was commander of the 20th Air Force, responsible for intercontinental ballistic missiles stationed in the United States.

He visited Russia in July as head of a delegation to a nuclear security training exercise.

After being relieved of his command in October, Carey was reassigned as a special assistant to the commander of the Air Force’s Space Command. He no longer has responsibility over nuclear weapons.
