Uzbekistan’s state media has reported that presidential decree was signed on April 19, saying that, in connection with celebrations for the 69th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany -- due to be marked in the country next month -- each veteran will receive 600,000 soms ($264), as a one-off financial support.

Almost 1.5 million men and women from Uzbekistan took part in the war.

More than 400,000 of them died in battle and some 130,000 are considered missing in action.

More than 4,000 veterans of World War II are currently living in Uzbekistan.
