Yugoslavia: High Court Annuls Parts Of Election

Belgrade, 4 October 2000 (RFE/RL) - The Yugoslav constitutional court today annulled parts of the disputed September 24 presidential election. The state news agency Tanjug quotes a court statement as saying that the court decided to annul part of the electoral procedure for the election of the Yugoslav president.

It said the effected procedure "relates to the voting process, the establishment and the publication of the results." But it gave no further details on how the decision will effect the outcome of the polls.

Official results placed opposition coalition leader Vojislav Kostunica as the winner, but the election commission said his overall support was less than the 50 percent needed to avoid a run-off against incumbent President Slobodan Milosevic and called a run-off on Sunday.

Earlier today, the constitutional court had delayed until Friday whether to uphold an opposition complaint over the official results from the election.
