The agreements were approved at yesterday's summit in Bratislava between Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin.
They include plans to upgrade security at Russian nuclear plants and weapons stockpiles, and to set up a program to prevent the diversion of nuclear fuel. The countries also agreed on measures to curb the trafficking of portable shoulder-fired missile systems that can threaten aircraft.
U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate John Kerry said in a statement that he applauded the action, but that more will need to be done to secure nuclear weapons and material in Russia and elsewhere around the world.
The agreements were also welcomed by Senator Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who has been heavily involved in efforts against weapons proliferation.
