Geneva Hosts Meeting On Caspian Development

June 28, 2005

28 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Government officials, executives of oil and gas companies, and representatives of international agencies meet today in Switzerland to discuss the Caspian Sea region's role in the security of global energy supplies.

The meeting in Geneva is being organized by the 55-member United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), according to the UNECE's website.

The meeting is expected to discuss how the Caspian region countries -- Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan -- can contribute to a reduction of global energy security risks in a world of rising demand. Ways to increase investment in, and development of, the region's vast oil and natural-gas resources are also expected to be debated.

The meeting is expected to hear addresses from Igor Yusufov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy on international energy cooperation; Kazakh Energy Minister Vladimir Shkolnik; and Zaur Yaqubov, special adviser to Azerbaijan's fuel and energy minister.
