EU Official Decries Policy Failure At Srebrenica

11 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana says that the Srebrenica massacre 10 years ago represents a "shameful failure" by the international community.

Solana made his remarks today in a statement as ceremonies marking the 10th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre were under way in Bosnia.

Solana says the EU learned a "terrible lesson" from the massacre, which he says was partially a consequence of a divided Europe.

Ten years ago, Serb troops entered Srebrenica, which was designated a United Nations "safe area" and guarded by Dutch troops.

Serb forces proceeded to kill up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the town. The carnage at Srebrenica is considered to be the worst massacre in Europe since World War II.
