Turkey Seeking CIA Help To Fight PKK

12 December 2005 -- Turkey says it wants the United States to provide more intelligence to help it fight the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).


Government spokesman Cemil Cicek said today Ankara has "expectations" of a higher intelligence-sharing levels from Washington relating to PKK insurgent operations.


He was speaking during a visit by the head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Porter Goss.


Turkish forces have been battling PKK insurgents in the southeast of the country since 1984. More than 37,000 people have died in the fighting. The Kurdish organization is on the U.S. and European Union lists of foreign terrorist organizations.
