6 January 2006 -- The European Union is to introduce new laws to combat the illegal trade in caviar within a matter of months.

The announcement was made on 5 January by the EU's executive body,  the European Commission.

The move comes after a decision on 4 January by the United Nations to block caviar exports until producer countries around the Caspian and Black Seas provide better information about stock levels and illegal sales of the highly prized delicacy.
