March 28, 2006 -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko is to hold consultations today with the leaders of parties that won seats in parliament in the March 26 elections.
With more than two-thirds of the vote counted, election authorities say the pro-Russian Party of Regions, led by former presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych, leads with more than 29 percent of the vote.
The bloc of former Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko is in second place, with more than 22 percent.
Tymoshenko on March 27 called for Yushchenko to name her prime minister of a new liberal coalition to keep Moscow-backed parties out of office.
The Our Ukraine bloc, which backs the president, was in third place in the election results, with more than 15 percent. Other parties expected to enter the 450-seat Verkhovna Rada include the Socialists and Communists.
