Russian Foreign Minister In Canada, U.S. For Talks

March 6, 2006 -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is in Ottawa for talks with the leaders of Canada's new conservative government.

Following a meeting with his counterpart Peter MacKay today, Lavrov reiterated Russia's call for Iran to return to a moratorium on enriching uranium as a condition for taking part in a joint enrichment facility on Russian territory.


On Transdniester, Lavrov called on all parties to take measures "urgently" to prevent the economic blockade of Moldova's breakaway region.


The Russian foreign minister also said the Palestinian militant group Hamas "did not rule out" holding peace negotiations with Israel on the basis of the international road map for Middle East peace.


The comment followed a visit by Hamas leaders to Moscow.


Lavrov is also to meets with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. From Ottawa, he is due to travel to Washington for talks with U.S. President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
