Tajik Party Accuses Interior Ministry Of Murder

May 04, 2006

(RFE/RL)

DUSHANBE, May 4, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan (IRP) is accusing Interior Ministry officials of murdering one of its party members.

Vahedkhon Quassidinov, the IRP's chief of administration, today told RFE/RL's Tajik Service that Sadullo Marufov was arrested on May 3 and taken for questioning to a police station in the northern town of Isfara.

Quassidinov says that Marufov was later pushed to his death from the third floor of the police station. The IRP claims an autopsy showed Marufov had been treated violently before his fall.

Interior Ministry officials in Tajikistan have confirmed to RFE/RL's Tajik Service that a member of the IRP died after falling from the third floor of the police station, but say they cannot confirm murder.

Deputy Interior Minister Abdulrahim Qahhorov says an investigative team from the ministry has been sent to Isfara. The IRP is also sending a delegation to investigate.
