July 12, 2006 -- Moldova's separatist region of Transdniester has said it will hold a referendum on September 17 at which inhabitants of the pro-Moscow enclave will face two questions, on whether Transdniester should become independent and then "freely unite with" Russia, or whether it should abandon its drive for independence and rejoin Moldova.
Transdniester broke away from Moldova in the early 1990s.
