U.S. Asks Two Kyrgyz Diplomats To Leave

The U.S. military's use of an air base in Kyrgyzstan has been one ongoing bilateral issue (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) August 2, 2006 -- Kyrgyzstan's Foreign Ministry says two of its embassy employees in Washington have been declared persona non grata.

Kyrgyz media have quoted a ministry statement as saying U.S. authorities provided no explanation for the decision, but say the move is in response to the recent expulsion of two U.S. diplomats from Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry on July 12 accused the two U.S. Embassy employees of conducting activities that were incompatible with their diplomatic status.

Today, the Foreign Ministry said it hopes relations between Bishkek and Washington will continue to develop, despite the tit-for-tat expulsion of embassy personnel.

Reports that six Kyrgyz security officers who were undergoing training in the United States were recently asked to leave the country cannot be officially confirmed.
