May 15, 2007

Tasev was gunned down less than two years after the club's previous owner was also killed (AFP)

May 15, 2007 -- The president of a top Bulgarian soccer club, Lokomotiv Plovdiv, has been shot dead in the capital, Sofia.

Police said Aleksandr Tasev was shot twice in the head while he was in his car on May 14.

He is the third president of the premier-division team to be shot dead.

The European Union, which Bulgaria joined in January, has warned the country to curb organized crime and overhaul its criminal justice system.
