Free Media In Unfree Societies

Dear Readers:

As our regular visitors will have noticed, we've redesigned our website. The change is to reflect our evolving content: more multimedia, more commentary, and more blogs. We also wanted to make the site easier to navigate and easier on the eye. But most of all, through our content, we want to explain to you what we do: providing free and uncensored information to societies that need it.

That's why much of what you'll read on rferl.org is focused on human rights, civil society, and press freedom. That's why we've launched a blog called Watchdog, which we hope will become the place of record in documenting rights abuses across our region. And that’s why we've launched a new series called On The Front Lines, profiling the unsung heroes, the human rights activists, civil society advocates, and journalists, who battle daily against repressive regimes.

In addition, we'll have more commentary, reflecting a multitude of viewpoints, and new blogs. For starters, we've launched Transmission, a blog that serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story that bubbles up from our bureaus.
