About The Exhibit

Since it went on the air in 2001, Afghanistan's most popular radio station, RFE/RL's Radio Azadi, has received "fan mail" from merchants, clerics, farmers, university students and schoolchildren across Afghanistan. The ornate letters and scrolls, which number in the thousands, tackle serious topics like terrorism and corruption, while also making simple song requests and dedications.

From Febuary through April 2010, the Library of Congress displayed a hand-picked selection of the letters in an exhibit titled "Voices from Afghanistan" in the Library's Jefferson Room. RFE/RL has presented these letters as a gift to the Library's permanent collection.
