RFE/RL is a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Congress. Corporate headquarters are in Washington D.C., but programming originates from our Prague operational headquarters as well as from bureaus.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is seeking a Senior Editor for our programming to the Pashto-speaking people of Pakistan and the Pakistani-Afghan border region.
Reporting to the Afghan Service Director the incumbent will be managing and directing the daily operations, and will be responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly planning, and the content, of the program in the assigned department. The Senior Editor will also assist the Service Director to implement RFE/RL goals and objectives in assigned areas. He/She will be responsible for the editorial content of his/her own work, as well as that of the more junior staff, ensuring that news output, information and features are balanced, accurate, and conform to RFE/RL policy and the highest standards of journalism; will also perform other duties as required for overall management of daily operations.
Duties:
- Management: Coordinates assignments and evaluates work of service staff as well as that of stringers in local bureaus. Trains new staff. Performs other related duties associated with day to day operational requirements, as required.
- Writing and Editing: Selects, writes, translates, adapts and edits news/feature stories from assigned material or from original research and reporting. Scripts are complex and usually prepared for significant and/or special programming. Screens and evaluates source materials, taking into account program contributions of other employees. Writes original features, analysis and commentary. Edits, or supervises the editing of, scripts from staff and stringer reports.
- Programming: Initiates program ideas. Develops and produces original material and compiles and edits scripts from source materials and staff for regularly scheduled, complex radio feature programming. Develops program line-up and ensures a balanced presentation. Works with production staff to obtain best use of production techniques. Routinely works on or directs the coverage of special events.
- Reporting: Works as field correspondent and reporter on assignment, determining focus of reports. Conducts or assigns interviews, participates in, leads, organizes on-air discussions.
- Broadcasting: Voices news and features scripts for recorded and live broadcasts. Moderates programs and roundtable discussions. Functions as on-air anchor.
- Production: Directs and monitors the recording of stringer and staff reports. Operates audio equipment and digital audio work stations.
Qualifications:
Education:
- University degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent training and experience in one of these disciplines.
Experience:
- Minimum of eight years' news journalism experience.
- Broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures in broadcast region, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs.
- Knowledge of new technological developments in communications, such as the Internet.
- Minimum 3 years supervisory experience in a news organization.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to jounralistic objectivity and integrity.
- Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds.
- Relevant experience in one or more of RFE/RL broadcast regions.
- Background in broadcast journalism.
Special Skills:
- Good broadcasting voice with effective delivery.
- Ability to read and comprehend source materials in English and other foreign languages in RFE/RL's broadcast area.
- Ability to operate audio equipment and digital audio work stations effectively to produce a variety of routine and complex programs.
Languages:
- Native language fluency in Pashto
- Sufficient command of English to be able to read source materials and communicate effectively.
- Proficiency in other languages of the RFE/RL broadcast region highly desirable.
