RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) is an independent, international news and broadcast organization to Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, the Middle East to include Iran and Iraq Central and Southwest Asia.
Across our broadcast region, more than 30 million people enjoy and rely on RFE/RL programming. Through broadcasts in 28 languages, RFE/RL provides news, information and responsible discussion of domestic and international issues to countries where free and independent media are not permitted or not yet fully established.
RFE/RL is a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Congress. Corporate headquarters are in Washington D.C., but programming originates from our Prague operational headquarters as well as from bureaus.
We are currently seeking a Deputy Director for our unique and innovative 24/7 Persian Language Service - Radio Farda, to be based in Prague, Czech Republic.
Reporting to the Service Director of Radio Farda, you will assist the Director in the overall management of the service, including content and production, planning and administration. Additionally, you will provide support in supervising and recruiting staff members, correspondents and freelancers, as well as overlook payments for the correspondents' and freelancers' services. In addition, you will also support Director with all operational matters and activities, as well as with establishment of the strategic short and long planning objectives and goals of Radio Farda and its communication to staff, as they relate to the broadly defined goals and mission of RFE/RL.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports Director in all his journalistic, administrative, and other managerial activities and acts as Director in his absence.
- Assists Director on overseeing the work of Radio Editor in Chief, On-line Editor in Chief and Chief Producer of Music.
- Coordinates content migration between all platforms of Radio Farda
- Supports Director in coordinating, scheduling, tracking and monitoring work and operational activities of all staff members and freelance correspondents in the fields.
- Identifies staff training needs and works with HR Training to select and arrange staff development training programs.
- Supports Service Director in administrative responsibilities.
- Due to unforeseen events or circumstances and from time to time Deputy Director may be called upon to perform tasks or duties which may be outside the scope of this job description, therefore Deputy is responsible to perform all tasks which are assigned due to operational needs that must be performed on behalf of Radio Farda.
- Performs broadcasting and editorial duties as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional fluency in spoken and written Persian and English essential
- A university degree in journalism, international relations, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in one of these disciplines
- Minimum of 10 years professional journalism experience including work in a fast-paced, international news organization
- Broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of Iran and surrounding regions, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs
- 5 years' supervisory experience in a news organization that includes responsibility for budgeting, managing staff and resources, organizing work processes, and organizing processes
- Demonstrated strong commitment to journalistic objectivity and integrity
- Knowledge of new technological developments in communications, such as the Internet.
- Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds
