RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) is an independent, international news and broadcast organization to Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, the Middle East to include Iran and Iraq Central and Southwest Asia.
Across our broadcast region, more than 30 million people enjoy and rely on RFE/RL programming. Through broadcasts in 28 languages, RFE/RL provides news, information and responsible discussion of domestic and international issues to countries where free and independent media are not permitted or not yet fully established.
RFE/RL is a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Congress. Corporate headquarters are in Washington D.C., but programming originates from our Prague operational headquarters as well as from bureaus.
We are currently seeking a Radio Editor in Chief for our unique and innovative 24/7 Persian Language Service - Radio Farda, to be based in Prague, Czech Republic.
Under the direction of a Service Director, you will take full line management responsibility for Radio Farda program development and content of Radio Farda’s radio programs, and you will have ultimate editorial responsibility for the same.
In addition, you will also support Service Director in setting service strategy and goals of Radio Farda as they align with RFE/RL's mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans the daily and weekly program.
- Responsible for broadcast output as required.
- Tracks and monitors progress of programs until broadcast.
- Ensures 100% on air, on time broadcast as per schedule.
- Is responsible for the flow of news throughout the day, manages content of all stories, analysis and features produced by staff and freelancers.
- Is responsible for setting priorities, editorial content, for style, and for production standards of content produced by assigned staff for radio.
- Oversees work of radio shift editors on planning for program slots and magazines, order and structure of news packages (news, promos, etc.).
- Works with On-line Ediotr in Chief to coordinates flow between Radio and Web.
- Coordinates flow of Radio Farda products with Newsroom and language services.
- Keeps up with the news and speaks knowledgeably about current events as they relate to own broadcast region and Iran..
- Regularly listens to and evaluates broadcasts; provides feedback to staff on content and performance.
- Privides feedback to staff and Director/Deputy Director on content and performance, coaches and motivates broadcast staff.
- Performs broadcasting and editorial duties as needed.
- Works closely with Director and Deputy Director to ensure smooth operation of Radio Farda broadcasting.
- Assists Service Director and Deputy Director in recruiting new staff for radio and provides input and cooperates with Service Director and Deputy Director on performance reviews of broadcasting staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional fluency in spoken and written Persian and English essential, Fluency in other language of the RFE/RL broadcast region highly desirable
- Completion of undergraduate degree and preferably advanced degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent training and experience
- Minimum of 10 years professional journalism experience including work in a fast-paced, international news organization
- Broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of Iran and surrounding regions, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs
- 5 years' supervisory experience in a news organization that includes responsibility for budgeting, managing staff and resources, organizing work processes, and organizing processes
- Demonstrated strong commitment to journalistic objectivity and integrity
- Knowledge of new technological developments in communications, such as the Internet
- Familiarity with electronic media, aimed at establishing, maintaining and developing affiliate relations
- Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds
- Relevant experience in one or more of RFE/RL broadcast regions
