Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an international broadcast organization based in Washington, D.C. and Prague, Czech Republic. RFE/RL's programs -- via radio, the Internet, and television -- reach influential people in 21 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asian nations.

RFE/RL's mission is to provide accurate and reliable news and information to domestic audiences in the local language. RFE/RL broadcasts in 28 languages and attracts nearly 18 million weekly listeners and online visitors.

With more than 400 journalists, 750 freelancers, and 20 local bureaus, RFE/RL is one of the most comprehensive news operations in the world. It is funded by the U.S. Congress through the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).

We are currently seeking an On-line Writer/Editor for our Turkmen Service Web site.

Fluent in Turkmen and English, the On-line Writer/Editor will initiate, develop, produce, and edit news and feature stories in Turkmen and English for the Turkmen Service site and for the converged, multimedia operation of the Service.

The On-line Writer/Editor will help create content to extend the radio product online, provide high quality, accurate and credible news and incorporate interactive and multiple platform elements such as forums, polls, playlists, podcasts and WAP-enabled pages. The writer must also understand and implement online best practices to help ensure the Web site is both accurate and timely.

The On-line Writer/Editor will: rewrite, develop, report, produce, and edit news and feature stories in Turkmen for the Turkmen Service Web site and for the converged, multimedia operation of the Service.

The On-line Writer/Editor will work with material from the Turkmen broadcast staff as well as international news sources and original research and reporting, including interviews with persons in Turkmenistan and around the world. Will work with a standard Web-based publishing tool, but ability to use additional multimedia tools for audio editing, image manipulation and the creation of slide shows or Flash elements is a plus.

This position will be placed in Prague, Czech Republic.

Qualifications:

•Professional fluency in Turkmen and English.

•Demonstrated writing and analytical skills with broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of Turkmenistan and surrounding regions, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs.

•Minimum of 2-3 years journalism experience.

•Online experience is strongly desired.

•Demonstrated strong written language skills. Familiarity with AP Style, a plus.

•Demonstrated strong commitment to journalistic integrity and objectivity.

•A university degree in journalism, international relations, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in one of these disciplines

•Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds.

•Knowledge and practical experience of radio broadcasting practices and techniques is highly desired.

•Ability to read and understand Russian and other languages spoken in RFE/RL’s broadcast regions would be a plus.

•Ability to work weekends and nights, as required.
