This is a position for a front-end enthusiast with strong visual skills and a hunger for applying cutting edge technology to news. The successful candidate will put his/her skills and knowledge to use in a creative way and see the results shown immediately to an audience of hundreds of thousands. The interactive designer is responsible for Current Time’s visual and interactive digital products, including microsites, games, bots, internal journalistic and social media tools, and feature stories with interactive elements. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in both visualization and coding, being able to design and program projects from conceptualization to completion.
Designs online interactives, including microsites, and graphic elements for feature content.
Works closely with writers, editors and other designers to create visual projects under tight deadlines, also helping them make sense of difficult data sets to present compelling stories.
Develops bots, games and other tools, with a specific focus on a positive and informative experience, particularly for mobile consumption.
Provides design and execution for web pages.
2+ years of front-end development experience, preferably on media-related projects
1+ year of experience working in a news environment is a plus
ONE OR MORE OF THESE QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE A MAJOR PLUS:
Working knowledge of one or more server-side languages (Ruby/Python/PHP/etc.),
Experience with data manipulation, including mining, parsing, scraping, machine learning, statistical analysis (in Python/R/SQL/…)
Strong familiarity with GIS concepts, relevant tools (QGis/ArcGIS/PostGIS)
Russian language proficiency
English language proficiency
Proficiency with modern visualization tools, APIs and platforms like D3.js/Mapbox/Leaflet.js/Highcharts/amCharts/Storymap/Tableau/etc.
Superb hands on design skills as well as significant UI experience to identify and implement strategic best practice solutions, with an expert understanding of graphic tools like Photoshop and Illustrator.
Educated or pursuing a degree in graphic design, computer Science, Journalism or a related field (BA - Bachelor degree desirable). Comparable relevant experience also acceptable.
