Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's Family Background

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's conviction for the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings marked the end of a long road for the ethnic Chechen, whose family emigrated to the United States in 2002.

Dzhokhar is believed to have planned the attacks with his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed during a manhunt following the bombings.

Their route to the United States is not exactly clear, but it is known that the Tsarnaev family lived in Kyrgyzstan, which was home to many Chechen refugees who were deported under Stalin.

They also resided in the predominantly Muslim Russian republic of Daghestan, which the family fled after violence erupted in the North Caucasus during the Second Chechen War in 1999.

The Tsarnaevs eventually made their way to the United States three years later, and Dzhokhar became an American citizen in 2012.
