Drawing Attention To The Case Of Azerbaijan's Khadija Ismayilova

Earlier this week, Khadija Ismayilova, an Azerbaijani investigative journalist and contributor to RFE/RL, was awarded a prestigious media freedom award from the PEN American Center.

Ismayilova was unable to be in New York to collect the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom To Write Award, however, as she is beginning her sixth month in pretrial detention in Baku following her arrest on December 5 on charges ranging from tax evasion to abuse of power to inciting a man to attempt suicide.

Ismayilova and international rights groups say the charges are politically motivated, retribution for her articles probing corruption at the highest levels of power in Baku, which is soon to host the first-ever European Games, despite the country's well-documented human rights abuses.

PEN commissioned a series of editorial cartoons to draw attention to Ismayilova's case.
