October 04, 2012
Serbia’s Interior Ministry banned a gay-pride parade scheduled for October 6, along with related public events planned for this week. Only an exhibition of works by Swedish artist Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin, originally part of the Pride Week celebrations, was allowed to open on October 3, with photographs showing sexually themed reinterpretations of scenes from the New Testament. Some 200 police were deployed to guard the gallery to prevent violence by hooligans and Orthodox believers. (Video by Iva Martinovic of RFE/RL’s Balkan Service)
