Some of the Iraqi Christians who were forced to flee the rebel-controlled city of Mosul spoke with RFE/RL in Dohuk, in the neighboring autonomous region of Kurdistan. They said militants of the Islamic State, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), marked the homes of Christians as "property of the Islamic State" and gave the city's Christian community three choices: to convert to Islam, to begin paying a monthly tax for practicing a religion other than Islam, or to be executed if they remained in Mosul.
