Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, making a speech on May 27 at the site of the world's first atomic bombing. At the city's memorial to those who died in the World War II attack in 1945, he said he came to honor the dead, but he stopped short of offering an official apology from the United States. He said that mankind has to "escape the logic of fear" and "change our mindset about war itself." (Reuters)
