The Spray Can Is Mightier Than The Sword

Published 21 July 2011

Alexis Zimberg and Nicholas van Beek are traveling the former Soviet Union to document how graffiti is used as a form of protest when other outlets of expression are limited. They explain the dissenting opinions they saw on the walls of the Belarusian capital, where the government has been battling opposition protests.

A glimpse into the innate need for humans to express themselves - tell us when you decide to put all these ideas together in an article or book. Maybe Banksy had it right all along.....

The intriguing part of this form of artistic/political expression, for me, is in its relational inner/outer dialogue. Humans are consistent in their need to communicate which one another.

Great exposure to the human element and the need to leak out oppositional thoughts to what the Government will allow!
When the limitation comes from an outer source, the human response is to find a way.
While traveling in Bali, as a student of human response, a group of us found yet another way of oppression (Oh! shock!!!) through strict and time honored religious mores...in that culture, we found, it is "unacceptable" to feel/experience anger...so, the "leakage" of agression has become a passive agressiveness that permeates that very peaceable culture.
Basic human need will alway pervade, even when, maybe especially if, when disallowed by others!
Again, great and interesting exposure, thank you!
