Armenia: Will Violence Fuel Passions Further?

Introduction:
Political opponents of President Robert Kocharian have vowed to continue to seek his resignation despite the violent dispersal of a demonstration in Yerevan on 13 April and an apparent roundup by authorities of opposition leaders. Kocharian's administration has since sought to muzzle his political adversaries, storming their political headquarters, raiding homes, and detaining activists. The crackdown came after thousands of Armenians launched peaceful protests on 9 April to demand Kocharian's resignation, arguing that the results of the February-March 2003 ballot that ostensibly re-elected him were falsified. Amid continuing protests in the predawn hours of 13 April -- just hours before an opposition-imposed deadline for setting a referendum on Kocharian's presidency was set to run out -- security forces struck.
