Official returns made public the day after the 15 October presidential election in Azerbaijan showed a landslide victory for Prime Minister Ilham Aliyev, whose octogenarian father, incumbent President Heidar Aliyev, withdrew from the race days earlier due to failing health. The validity of the official vote is in question after reports by international observers of widespread fraud and procedural violations. Despite fervent protests, Aliyev was inaugurated on 31 October. Following in the footsteps of his father, he proceeded to reappoint the former prime minister who had served under his father on 4 November and several other key ministers the following day.
