Since 1975, leaders of the world's major industrial democracies -- Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States -- have met annually to discuss political and economic matters. Canada became the seventh member of the G-6 in 1976. And this year, Russian President Boris Yeltsin's participation in the Denver, Colorado, meeting turned the G-7 conference into a "Summit of the Eight."
