Born: 8 May 1963 in village of Kuigan Kurchumsky District, Semipalatinsk Oblast

1980-86 -- attends Moscow's Bauman Advanced Technical Institute, specializing as an engineer/mechanic

May 1989-October 1989 -- full-time secretary in the Komsomol committee of the Semipalatinsk Mashinostroitelny factory

October 1989 -- director of oblast association's "Maksat" youth center under the guidance of the Semipalatinsk Oblast Komsomol committee

August 1990 -- director of commercial firm Toman

January 1992 -- general director of Semey financial-industrial association in Semipalatinsk

April 1994 -- elected deputy to Semipalatinsk provincial Mashilihat, local council from fifth district of Semipalatinsk

June 1994 -- governor of Semipalatinsk Province

March-November 1997 -- chairman of agency for control of strategic resources

December 1997-November 2001 -- governor of Pavlodar Province

21 November 2001 -- dismissed as governor on advice of Prime Minister Tokaev after Zhakiyanov helps create Democratic Movement of Kazakhstan

29 March 2002 -- arrested for alleged financial abuse
