Pro-Presidential Party Cleans Up In Kazakh Elections
Kazakhstan's Central Election Commission announced on 23 September that the pro-presidential Otan party garnered 60 percent of the vote in 19 September parliamentary elections, Interfax-Kazakhstan reported. Ten seats in the 77-member lower chamber of parliament are distributed by party slates, giving Otan seven of the party-slate seats, while the pro-presidential Asar party, pro-presidential AIST bloc of the Civic and Agrarian Parties, and the moderate opposition party Ak Zhol received one seat each. Among 67 single-mandate constituencies, 45 races produced first-round winners, "Kazakhstan Today" reported. Otan won 27 races, AIST nine, and Asar two, while seven independents also emerged as winners. A second round in 22 races is tentatively scheduled for 3 October. According to "Kazakhstan Today," cumulative results as of 23 September are: 34 seats for Otan, 10 for AIST, three for Asar, one for Ak Zhol, and seven for independents.
