Kurmanbek Bakiev Kurmanbek Bakiev, head of the People's Movement of Kyrgyzstan, has
been one of the most visible opposition figures during antigovernment
protests. The former prime minister last year became the first
candidate nominated to stand in this October's presidential elections. more |
Feliks Kulov Feliks Kulov, former Kyrgyz vice president, Bishkek mayor, and
chairman of the opposition party Ar-Namys, was released on 24 March
from the Bishkek jail where he had served four years of a combined 17
year sentence on charges of embezzlement and abuse of office. more

Roza Otunbaeva Roza Otunbaeva, leader of Kyrgyzstan's Ata-Jurt (Fatherland)
movement, made the transition to the political opposition after a
career that spanned both the latter years of the Soviet Union and the
first decade of Kyrgyzstan's independence. more

Bishkek became the center of the Kyrgyz protest movement on 24 March.
From early morning protesters began to mass in the city center. By
the end of the day, the government was ousted and the president had
fled.
