Introduction:
Ukraine's 21 November presidential-election runoff led to widespread protests that culminated in a Supreme Court decision annulling the results, which had Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych winning over opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko by three percentage points.

A package of electoral and constitutional changes that was adopted by parliament and approved by outgoing President Leonid Kuchma paved the way for a repeat of the contentious second round to be held on 26 December.
