28 December 1993 -- Supreme Soviet, or Supreme Kengesh, votes to change its name to Majlis

14 December 1993 -- "Segodnya" reports two parties to take part in Uzbek parliamentary elections, the HDP and the Watan Taraqqiyoti

7 December 1993 -- "Izvestiya" (9 December) reports that the house of Birlik activist Momura Usmanova was broken into by three men who beat her husband -- causing a concussion, broken ribs, and sending him to the hospital -- and ransacked the home, taking documents but no valuables

15 November 1993 -- The som, the national currency, introduced, coupons only

23 July 1993 -- President Karimov appoints Saidmukhtar Saidkasymov, 46, foreign minister (Safayev dimissed earlier in the month)

25 February 1993 -- President Karimov declares "Uzbekistan's Special Path" to be economic, rather than political, reform
