29 November 2000 -- Security Council Secretary Mirakbar Rakhmankulov dismisses reports that Uzbekistan will allow the United States to use military bases on its territory

29 November 2000 -- Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Komilov demands the Taliban extradite members of the IMU who are in Afghanistan

17 November 2000 -- Supreme Court finds 12 alleged terrorists guilty of involvement in the February 1999 Tashkent bombings, sentences Tohir Yuldash and Jumaboy Khojayev, aka Juma Namangani, to death, Mohammad Solih gets 15-1/2 years imprisonment, none are present, others received prison terms of 12 to 20 years

13 November 2000 -- Trial of IMU and Mohammad Solih ends, prosecutor-general asks for death penalty for 10 of those accused of planning the February 1999 Tashkent bombings

30 October 2000 -- Trial against 12 "terrorists" from IMU, and Mohammad Solih, starts in Supreme Court, only Ulughbek Makhimutov, Olimjon Abduvohkidov and Usman Shukurov are present in court

21 October 2000 -- Prosecutor-General's office officially charges more than 30 people for trying to overthrow the government, among them are Tohir Yuldash, Juma Namangani and Salay Madaminov (Mohammad Solih)

4 October 2000 -- Defense Minister Kodyr Gulomov says Uzbekistan is placing land mines along its eastern borders, "as we do not have the possibility to erect checkpoints everywhere on the border, the most vulnerable parts are being equipped with the necessary technical means"

3 October 2000 -- Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Komilov says Uzbekistan has started a dialogue with the Taliban in Pakistan

29 September 2000 -- President Karimov fires Defense Minister Yuri Agzamov, replaces him with General Kodyr Gulomov

28 September 2000 -- RTR and AP report Tashkent court sentences one man to death, 13 others to prison terms of up to 24 years, for attacking government troops in November 1999, Uzbek TV says the man sentenced to death is Polvonnazir Khojayev

7 August 2000 -- Uzbek troops clash with IMU fighters in the Surkhandarya province, in the mountains along the Tajik border

12 July 2000 -- Amnesty International releases statement criticizing number of executions in Uzbekistan, says since the start of 1999 there have been at least 55 death sentences passed down and 15 carried out

5 July 2000 -- Shanghai Five hold summit in Dushanbe, President Karimov attends as an observer, name of group changed to "Shanghai Forum"

28 May 2000 -- ITAR-TASS reports Taliban ruler Mullah Omar warns Uzbekistan about allowing Russia to use its territory for strikes in Afghanistan

25 May 2000 -- President Karimov speaks to parliament, proposes setting up a bicameral parliament, also says no need for Russian troops in Uzbekistan, "we are capable of defending ourselves," but admits "we need military technical assistance," calls for reforming army

18-19 May 2000 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin visits

14 February 2000 -- President Karimov names General Yuri Agzamov as defense minister

11 February 2000 -- Parliament approves the new cabinet, Defense Minister Khikmatullah Tursunov dismissed

22 January 2000 -- First session of new parliament, there are 12 committees and four commissions, Erkin Khalilov reelected speaker of parliament

22 January 2000 -- President Karimov takes oath of office

12 January 2000 -- United States criticizes Uzbek presidential elections, U.S. State Department spokesman James Rubin says elections were "neither free nor fair and offered Uzbekistan's voters no true choice," says "the government of Uzbekistan refused to register truly independent opposition parties, nor did it permit members of these parties to run for president," adds, "the sole candidate permitted to oppose President Karimov was a public supporter of Karimov's policies and leadership and was quoted during the campaign as stating he himself intended to vote for Karimov"

11 January 2000 -- ODIHR releases statement saying it regrets democratic competition was absent during the presidential election, says election fell far short of Uzbekistan's commitment to the OSCE

11 January 2000 -- CEC declares President Karimov the winner of presidential election with 91.9 percent of vote, Abdulhafiz Jalolov gets 4.17 percent, CEC says 11.15 million people voted for Karimov and 505,200 for Jalolov, turnout was 12.13 million, or 95.1 percent, "Nezavisimaya Gazeta" (11 January) puts voter turnout at 12,123,199

10 January 2000 -- CEC chairman Nazhmiddin Kamilov says preliminary results of presidential election show President Karimov taking 91.9 percent of the vote

9 January 2000 -- Presidential elections held, President Karimov's opponent, Abdulhafiz Jalolov of the HDP, tells journalists "I make no secret of the fact that I voted for Karimov," Karimov running as the candidate from the Fidokorlar Party

7 January 2000 -- CEC Chairman Nazhmiddin Kamilov tells reporters equal conditions were created for both candidates in the 9 January presidential election
