A series of explosions and violent clashes with police struck Uzbekistan between 28 March and 1 April, leaving nearly 50 people dead and dozens injured. Uzbek authorities insist that the unprecedented use of suicide bombers and alleged Islamists make the attacks part of the worldwide terror threat. The apparent efforts to target police in the attacks and the comparatively low number of civilians hurt and killed suggests that other explanations of the violence are plausible.
