In the Hotel Bristol in downtown Belgrade, near the bus station that serves as a temporary home to hundreds of refugees who have escaped conflict in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, is a place called the Children's Corner. It's a sanctuary where children, during their difficult journey, can, at least for a short time, experience what kids are supposed to experience: peace of mind and play. Kids come and go through Children's Corner, and they often leave behind colorful evidence of their stays: crayon drawings.
In 1994, at the age of 39, Alyaksandr Lukashenka became the president of Belarus. This year, at 61 years old, he's widely expected to win a fifth term in office. Lukashenka's critics say that under his rule, not very much has changed in Belarus -- including the president's appearance.
As autumn arrives in Uzbekistan, one ethnic Kazakh family in the Zarafshan region is preparing to leave their summer home -- a richly decorated yurt set up next to their house. The breezy mobile shelter is a common choice to help residents escape the heat of summer. It's also a way for families to preserve the traditions of past generations who once carried their yurts with them to summer pastures. RFE/RL photographer Umida Akhmedova visited the village of Rahat earlier this year as a Kazakh family gathered to help set up their seasonal residence.

The territory formerly known as East Prussia once belonged to Germany, but it became part of the Soviet Union after World War II. The region was renamed Kaliningrad Oblast, and the German population was forcibly deported. It was repopulated by Soviet citizens. Many reminders of its German past were destroyed. But other traces, such as German buildings and works of art still remain. Here's a look at a collection of old postcards of Kaliningrad along with photos of the scenes as they appear today. Years of war and drought have increasingly forced Afghanistan's Kuchis, a nomadic tribal group, to abandon their traditional lifestyle and relocate to settled areas.
