The Alamedinskoye Sand Quarry

Kyrgyz authorities seized a massive sand quarry on the outskirts of Bishkek, citing environmental violations by the operator. Now the government is skirting environmental laws to ramp up production there, triggering outrage among residents and environmentalists.

The Dastan City residential complex is part of President Sadyr Japarov’s social housing program.

The Alamedinskoye open-pit sand mine was closed in 1985 due to pollution concerns and resumed operations in 1999.

Dastan City, a project featuring 9,000 apartments with 500 allocated for state workers, is part of President Sadyr Japarov's program to boost social housing for bureaucrats.

The construction contract was awarded to Expostroy Kurulush, a company owned by the nephew of a former Bishkek mayor sentenced to 11 years in prison on corruption charges.
