Georgian Journalist Forgives Politician's Attack After He Says 'Sorry'

Georgian journalist Tamar Okruashvili dropped criminal charges today against a politician who she says attacked her, because the politician has apologized to her.

Okruahsvili, who writes for Gori's "Khalkis Gazeti," had filed charges against Gori regional administration head Davit Khmiadashvili after she says he smashed her camera at a meeting on December 9.

But Okruashvili said that since Khmiadashvili has apologized to her and paid for the damaged camera, she will not pursue the criminal case.

Khmiadashvili denies that he hit Okruashvili's camera but says he had a verbal encounter with her "because she was disseminating false information."

Georgia's Association of Regional Journalists said in a statement that there have been several cases of journalists being harassed by local officials.
