Fear In Latvia As Military Drones Bring Ukraine War To NATO’s Eastern Border

Latvia's eastern region of Latgale is adjusting to a new reality of air raid alerts after several drones crossed into the country's airspace in recent weeks. The warnings have disrupted school exams, interrupted public events, and raised concerns about safety in communities near the borders with Russia and Belarus. The repeated drone incidents have increased concerns about the Russia-Ukraine war spilling over NATO and the EU's borders.

Ukraine Bolsters Defenses Along Belarus Border Amid Concerns Of New Invasion

In Ukraine's Chernihiv region, along a section of the Dnieper River that divides Ukraine and Belarus, border guards are on the lookout for signs of another invasion from the north. In May, Kyiv warned that Russia was once again trying to draw Belarus into the war against Ukraine. Current Time correspondent Andriy Kuzakov traveled to the border to see how Ukrainian units feel about a possible attack from Belarus.

Iran Executes 2 More Over January Protests, Jails Man 10 Years For Filming

Two more men have been executed in Iran in connection with the January protests with human rights groups condemning growing repression in the country. Iran's judiciary announced on June 1 that the men were hanged after being convicted of attacking a mosque. More than 40 people have now been executed in Iran since the start of the war with the United States and Israel. An Iranian man was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for simply shooting video of protests that first erupted in December 2025 over economic hardship.

From Battlefield To Racecourse: Ukraine’s Drone Pilots Compete Far From The Front Lines

Some 300 Ukrainian drone operators recently took a break from combat to compete in an event called Wild Drones, showing off the skills they have honed on the front lines. The competition in the Lviv region gives the drone pilots a chance to earn bragging rights, share knowledge, and give feedback to the defense firms behind technology that is being used in the long-running war with Russia.

Back Online After Internet Blackout Ends, Iranians Still Face Limited Communications

Internet access in Iran has been partially restored after the government shut down communications at the start of the US-Israeli bombing campaign in late February. Iranians told RFE/RL's Radio Farda that they had been unable to check on their loved ones' safety during months of deadly air strikes. Even as the total blackout ended on May 27, Iranians inside and outside the country described slow connections and difficulty reaching friends and family.

In Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and neighboring countries, newborn boys outnumber girls at a rate well beyond the worldwide average. That shift is the result of sex-selective abortion, in which families choose to terminate a pregnancy when a daughter is expected. Social scientists warn that this choice is not always made freely by pregnant women, who sometimes face coercion from their husbands and relatives.

Some Iranians in exile who are advocating a return of the monarchy in Tehran have been displaying symbols associated with the notorious secret police, SAVAK, used by the former shah to repress political opponents before the Islamic Revolution in 1979. That imagery has sparked outrage among fellow exiles and is complicating the position of Reza Pahlavi, the son of the shah, who hopes to return to power if the current theocratic rule in Iran should crumble.
