  Analysis: Macedonia's Government Under Growing Pressure

  The aftermath of 23 July riots in Struga On 26 July, the Macedonian parliament started debating the government's controversial plans to decentralize the state administration and to cut the number of administrative districts from currently 123 to 80. The tense atmosphere in the plenary mirrored the controversy that had been going on in public -- and in the streets -- for about two months (see "RFE/RL Balkan Report," 2 and 23 July 2004).

  New Conservative Party Founded In Macedonia

  Followers of former Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski founded a new party in Skopje on 4 July. It has yet to be registered with a Skopje court but will be called Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-People's Party (VMRO-Narodna or VMRO-NP). Vesna Janevska, a medical doctor and close ally of Georgievski, was elected as the party's first chairwoman.

  Ali Ahmeti in 2002 On 4 June, Ali Ahmeti, the chairman of the governing ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), addressed a press conference to mark the second anniversary of the BDI's foundation. The press conference highlighted a remarkable transformation -- from an armed rebel organization to a moderate governing party.
