The Digital Strategy Manager, Social Media develops, executes, and assesses the unique digital strategies for distribution and engagement on social media for RFE/RL news services in alignment with RFE/RL’s overarching strategy, as well as the organization’s mission and standards.

Reporting to the Head of Digital Strategy, the Digital Strategy Manager applies and advises on the use of tools and tactics – informed by data and ruled by editorial priorities – to increase the number of active followers, their level of engagement, and their propensity to return to RFE/RL as their preferred source of reliable news.

You will propose, prototype, launch, adapt and assess the services’ presence on existing and new social media platforms, in collaboration with relevant service directors, editors and other colleagues with the goal of increasing the services’ long-term impact in target markets.

You actively advance collaboration in and across teams across RFE/RL and work towards raising the efficiency of production, distribution, engagement, and loyalty-building efforts on social media.

You help colleagues adapt to changes in their media environments to advance RFE/RL’s mission and meet its high editorial standards.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • You administer relevant social media accounts for the News Division and develop and optimize earned and owned social media strategies for them.
  • You assist and mentor journalists to help advance their Service’s presence on social media and advance their ability to lead and participate in social media conversations.
  • You lead, guide and contribute to cross-functional project teams to align editorial, technical, analytical, and marketing operations for an optimal editorial presence on social media.
  • You propose, prototype, launch, adapt and assess processes aimed at reaching and building relationships with audiences in target markets.
  • You seek out innovative storytelling opportunities (and success metrics) in target markets.
  • You coordinate projects to innovate new formats in social storytelling, including engaged journalism. 
  • You monitor the news media industry for innovative approaches to social media platforms and production processes. You review and give feedback on services’ social media operations and production processes.
  • You plan and execute training on changes in the digital media landscape, tools and best practices in coordination with the Training Department, the Standards team and senior editors.
  • You work with the Market Insight & Evaluation team to set and adjust success metrics for social media platforms and introduce them in the News Division.
  • You work with Language Services to track success metrics and assist them in taking informed decisions based on them.
  • You assist the Marketing Department in its efforts to streamline and set benchmark indicators for advertising on social media.
  • You guide the technical implementation of processes that relate to social media publishing through the CMS.
  • You perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • University education in journalism or related field or the equivalent in experience is preferred.

Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in digital journalism, esp. social media
  • At least 3 years in product management experience, incl. roadmaps and acting in consensus-facilitating roles
  • Familiarity with best practices, rules, and industry regulations and standards around podcast production
  • History of successful handling of progressively challenging assignments 

Competencies:

  • Proven ability to launch, run, and troubleshoot social media distribution
  • Strong knowledge of news and the news ecosystem
  • Strong history of mentoring and training of journalists 
  • Strong user empathy and understanding of social media metrics
  • Strong sense of news judgment, pace, and an eye for detail
  • Familiarity with RFE/RL mission and journalistic standards

Languages:

  • Proficiency in English
  • Other relevant languages, esp. Russian, preferred

Appointment against this post is on a local basis only. Please note that for the locally advertised positions preference will be given to those with a work permit and/or a valid residence status in the Czech Republic. Locally recruited employees should reside within commuting distance of Prague, Czech Republic, or be willing to move to take up work. Salary scales for locally recruited employees are based on the best prevailing local conditions. RFE/RL does, however, cover the costs of interview travel and, upon appointment, some relocation costs.
