George W. Bush in Brussels yesterday U.S. President George W. Bush today held the first summit-level meeting with his NATO allies after his reelection. At the summit at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Bush secured modest NATO support for training Iraqi security forces. While Bush said NATO remains the focal point in Washington’s ties with Europe, there were signs that Germany and France continue to push for a greater EU role in the trans-Atlantic relationship. The summit gave a show of support to the Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in his bid to bring his country closer to the alliance.
A view of today's Ukraine-NATO meeting 22 February 2005 -- President Viktor Yushchenko said today that Ukraine will press for closer ties with NATO and the European Union as part of his country's new drive to integrate with the West.
The European Union and Ukraine signed a joint "action plan" yesterday laying the groundwork for political and economic reforms in the country over the next three years. Both sides carefully avoided addressing the controversial issue of Ukraine's long-term relations with the bloc. Ukraine has made it clear it eventually wants to join the EU, but there is currently little enthusiasm for the prospect among the bloc's member states.

21 February 2005 -- The European Union today called on the United States to back Ukraine's bid to be admitted into the World Trade Organization this year.

The EU plans to adopt an action plan for Ukraine giving Kyiv certain benefits, including better trade terms and fewer visa restrictions. However, the plan falls short of addressing Ukraine's desire to join the bloc. While in Brussels, Yushchenko will also address the Ukraine-NATO Commission and hold talks with U.S. President George W. Bush.
21 February 2005 -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today that the two former Soviet republics should work to ensure that their relationship benefits both sides.
