Eleven Russian Soldiers Killed In Chechnya Ambush

18 May 2004 -- Russian news agencies say gunmen killed 11 Russian soldiers in an ambush in Chechnya.

Interfax and ITAR-TASS quote military officials today as saying the attack happened yesterday in Chechnya's central Urus-Martan region.

The officials said rebels blew up a military car with a land mine and shot at the soldiers. The rebels then blew up a Russian armored vehicle that came to their aid and opened fire on the occupants. Several soldiers were wounded and one was reported to be missing.
