Belarus Deports Ukrainian Journalist

President Lukashenka 21 June 2004 -- Belarus authorities deported Ukrainian journalist Mikhail Podolyak after the journalist was found guilty of slander.

Podolyak was convicted of writing articles that, according to Belarusian security services, "make up things about the real state of affairs in the country and appeals to destabilize the political situation in Belarus."

Podolyak had written several articles critical of Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

Belarus security officials reportedly put Podolyak on a train bound for Ukraine.
