Belarus Shuts Russian State TV's Minsk Bureau

24 July 2004 -- Belarusian authorities closed Russian state television's Minsk bureau yesterday.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said it acted because of what it described as slanted coverage of this week's opposition protest by an RTR television correspondent, Belarus' state television reported.

While the Belarusian authorities claimed that just about 200 protesters took part in a 21 July rally against Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the RTR correspondent estimated their number at several thousand.
