21 August 2004 -- The Pakistani military says that its forces were hunting Al-Qaeda linked rebels in the South Waziristan tribal region near the border with Afghanistan today.
Military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said that several foreign fighters were killed and injured. He said that security forces retrieved the body of a foreign militant and recovered arms and ammunition.
He said the action was part of continuing operations and denied some news reports that a new assault had begun.
The operations were in response to an attack on a military post on 9 June that left 14 security personnel dead. Some 65 militants and 18 soldiers were killed during the fighting. Since mid-July, security agencies have arrested more than 60 Al-Qaeda suspects in urban centers in Pakistan.
