Police Torture Allegations Probed In Georgia

18 October 2004 -- Authorities in Tbilisi say they are investigating 14 policemen suspected of torturing people in custody in Georgia.

Prosecutor-General Zurab Adeishvili said today more torture cases would be opened soon.

He told a news conference that prosecutors, police, and public defenders have agreed to institute a system under which lawyers will permanently monitor police stations and pretrial detention centers to prevent torture.
