Deputy Chief Of Russian Strategic Air Force Killed


1 November 2004 -- The deputy commander of Russia's strategic long-range air force was shot dead today in the western Smolensk Oblast.

Citing police, the Interfax news agency reported that unknown assailants opened fire on General Konstantin Dementev's car, killing both Dementev and his driver on the spot.

A second passenger was rushed to a Smolensk hospital.

No official comment was immediately available.
